The Benefits of Masturbation

Masturbation is the act on pleasing oneself. The definition seems simple enough, but the act is packed with so many benefits, techniques and variety that having one month dedicated to it may not be enough.

So I add to the celebration of posts with a series of posts exploring masturbation and all it has to offer. Today I explore the benefits of masturbation. Start a Google search, and you’ll find the list to be a long one. Here are five worth noting.

1. Relieves Depression

Getting yourself off releases oxytocin and serotonin – the happy hormones found in antidepressants- into your system. The more we touch ourselves, the more happy hormones we make. And with a series of touches leading up to orgasm, we feel the biggest release of those hormones flowing within us. Be careful though, not to become fully dependent on masturbation to relieve your depression. Too much of a good thing can go sour far too quickly.

2. Increases Self-Esteem

Masturbation helps you gain a greater sense of what your body does and doesn’t like. With a greater understanding of your body and greater control of your climaxes,  you become more in tune with yourself. Knowing yourself inside and out has a new meaning. According to Cosmopolitan, this knowledge is empowering. Think of each orgasm as the next step to knowing your self-worth.

3. Lowers Blood Pressure

Endorphins, the “feel-good molecules” of the body, are best known to be released during exercise. By reducing our perception of pain and producing euphoric feelings, endorphins helps to reduce blood pressure. Work your fingers out under your pants and the effect is the same.

4. Eases Menstrual Cramps

We already know that masturbation (and orgasm) release endorphins into our system. With the natural pain relievers flowing through our bodies, we can calm the nerve impulses that cause menstrual pain naturally. We feel the relief and can better fall asleep, just like with pain pills. Only masturbation makes it more fun. 😉

5. Reduces Risk of Prostate Cancer

Studies in Boston and Australia find that masturbation helps to decrease the chances of prostate cancer in men. The key? Ejaculation. Theoretically, each masturbation session ending in orgasm frees the prostate of toxins and possible infections.
